1. Are executive physicals only for executives?

Many of our patients see us in conjunction with their employers’ executive health programs.  However, we also welcome individuals, couples and families (children over 18 years of age).  Northwestern Medicine Executive Health is open to all adults looking for a convenient, comprehensive examination at a leading medical center.

2. How is an executive physical different than seeing my primary care physician?

It is very difficult if not impossible for a typical physician’s office to devote multiple hours to you, provide you with same-day results and incorporate specialist consultations and testing into a single visit.  As a result, any specialist consultation or testing must be scheduled separately causing multiple interruptions to your schedule and delaying treatment or diagnosis.

3. May I call the physician I see on my day of care in the future for illnesses and prescription refills?

No.  We do not act as your ongoing primary care physician.  We encourage everyone to have a primary care physician, whom you can call if you need to be seen for an illness or injury, and who can monitor any chronic conditions.

4. Can Northwestern Executive Health help me find the answer to my undiagnosed condition?

No.  Our one-day program focus is on preventive health. It is not designed to find the answer to a complicated, undiagnosed medical condition.  We are also unable to coordinate care in one day for complex or rare medical conditions.

5. What is the cost of an executive physical?

Your executive physical will include tests and examinations to address your specific needs and concerns.  The cost of your executive physical will be based on the services you receive.  Please contact us at 312.926.1300 for information on pricing.

If you are coming to Northwestern Medicine Executive Health as part of a corporate executive health program, please check with your employer regarding company-specific billing arrangements.

6. Will my health insurance cover any part of my executive physical?

A portion of the executive physical is not billable to insurance and must be paid prior to receiving services unless your employer has made prior arrangements.  For medical services, specialist consultations and most testing, Northwestern Medicine Executive Health accepts a variety of managed care, PPO and POS insurance plans.  Please contact us at 312.926.1300 to see if your health insurance will cover any of your examination.

7. Can I use my HSA/FSA card to pay for the program fee?

While we do not accept HSA/FSA cards for the program fee, you may use it to pay for any outstanding balance after your insurance processes payment (including deductibles, co-insurances, and co-pays).

8. How do I schedule an appointment for an executive physical?

Contact the Northwestern Medicine Executive Health at 312.926.1300 and ask to schedule an appointment.  We will also schedule a time for a pre-visit telephone consultation with the physician that will conduct your examination.

9. How far in advance should I schedule my executive physical?

It is to your advantage to schedule three months or more in advance of your appointment.  This will allow sufficient time to coordinate all of the services and consultations that you would like to receive on the day of your executive physical.

10. How long will my executive physical take?

Please plan to spend 8-10 hours with us for a typical executive physical.  Because your examination will be personalized based on your needs, your actual time at our center will vary.  Prior to your arrival, we will provide you with estimated start and end times.

11. What is the purpose of the pre-visit telephone consultation?

This is a conversation with the physician who will conduct your examination. During your consultation, you and the physician discuss your medical history, needs and concerns.  This will allow us to personalize your executive physical, including which specialists would be most beneficial for you to see on your day of care.

12. Why should I add specialist consultations to my executive physical?

a. Convenience:  See key medical specialists on one day instead of over the course of a year

b. Care Coordination:  Your Northwestern Medicine Executive Health physician will review all of your specialist reports and test results and consult with the specialists if necessary.  Prior to the end of your executive physical, the physician will give you a comprehensive review of all of your results with personalized recommendations.  This avoids communication issues between multiple medical specialists.

c. Access:  Northwestern Medicine Executive Health has access to the top specialists, both on-campus and off-campus, and can often facilitate appointments on an expedited basis.

13. Which specialists should I add?

During the telephone consultation with your Northwestern Medicine Executive Health physician, you and your doctor will identify which specialists are necessary based on your current health needs and concerns.  Our care coordinators have access to virtually any specialty available at Northwestern Medicine, and will use the information gathered during your phone consultation to coordinate your care.

If you need a colonoscopy, we can schedule you either prior to or after your executive physical.

14. Is a stress test or stress echocardiogram test included?

We recommend a stress test or a stress echocardiogram only if it is medically indicated, but not as a routine screening test. Your Executive Health physician will review your medical and family history and any symptoms with you and will recommend testing if indicated.

15. Does this include a full body MRI or CT scan?

Full body scans are not a standard feature of our program.  In the event that your Northwestern Medicine Executive Health physician recommends an advanced study, it will be for a specific purpose related to your personal health situation.  While constantly on the alert for serious diseases, our physicians believe in judicious use of radiation in screenings, and find the tests already offered at NEH cover the most common forms of disease.  During your phone consultation with your Northwestern Medicine Executive Health physician, your specific risk factors will be assessed to determine the necessity of these scans.

16. Do I need to bring my medical records?

We realize that you are busy and that obtaining medical records can be a time-consuming task.  If the Northwestern Medicine Executive Health physician would like to review your records, we will obtain them on your behalf.

17. When will I receive my results?

You and your Northwestern Medicine Executive Health physician will review your results at the end of your day of care.  Together, you will discuss your findings and review a personalized Action Plan created by your Northwestern Medicine Executive Health providers.  Your Action Plan will contain recommendations to address your current medical needs and prevent future illness.  At the completion of your day of care, we will provide you with a secure USB drive containing both your summary of findings and your Action Plan to prepare you for the coming year.

18. Does this replace my primary care physician?

Not at all. At Northwestern Medicine Executive Health, we recommend that each of our patients have a relationship with a primary care physician. If you do not have a primary care physician, we are happy to assist you in identifying one based on your personal preferences.  Northwestern Medicine Executive Health physicians are available for ongoing primary care on a fee-based membership basis.

19. Will you share my results with my primary care physician?

Northwestern Medicine Executive Health will, with your permission, communicate all findings from your executive physical including specialist and diagnostic reports, test results and recommendations to your primary care physician.

20. Will my medical information be shared with my employer?

Your medical information is confidential and will not be shared with your employer without your written consent.  Upon your arrival at Northwestern Medicine Executive Health, we will provide you with a Notice of Privacy Practices that describes how your medical information may be used and disclosed as well as your rights as a patient.

21. What if I have to reschedule my executive physical appointment?

Should you have to reschedule, please do so at least 14 days prior to your appointment to avoid a cancellation fee.
